TikTok Smart+: manual, partial or full automation, and the 2027 cutoff

TikTok Smart+ merges the manual and automated flows with module-level control. What you can still lock, the January 1, 2027 notice and what to test first.

Also available in: Português · Español

Smart+ is TikTok's campaign automation, and in its upgraded version it stopped being a separate campaign type: the manual flow and Smart+ are now one. You choose full, partial or manual automation, and decide module by module what to hand to the system: targeting, budget, placements, catalog and creative combinations. The date that matters is January 1, 2027: TikTok's API documentation says that from then on, API campaign creation stops accepting legacy manual flow campaigns, except Search, for Sales, App Promotion and Lead Generation. If you run those campaigns, you have until then to test the new flow without rushing.

Full, partial or manual: what each module does

TikTok's help center, updated in October 2026, describes the unified experience for Sales, Lead Generation, App Promotion and Traffic. Automated versus manual, module by module:

ModuleAutomatedManual
TargetingAutomatic targeting, with audience controls and suggestionsCustom targeting, with the full set of manual options
BudgetAutomatic campaign budget, spread across ad groupsBudget and bid set on each ad group
PlacementsAutomatic, which may include partner apps through Pangle, depending on regionYou pick the placements
CatalogOn or off, for supported objectivesOn or off, for supported objectives
CreativeThe system combines videos and copy and delivers the best performersOne creative and one copy per ad, as a fixed pair

TikTok's For Business blog sums it up: automation can be switched on or off at the module level, including targeting, budget, catalog ads and placements. In other words, moving to Smart+ does not force you to give up your audience.

One caveat from the help center itself: the upgraded experience may not be available to every account yet.

What changes on January 1, 2027

The notice is in TikTok's marketing API documentation, the one tools and agencies use to build campaigns through software. From January 1, 2027, the endpoints that create and copy campaigns, ad groups and ads stop creating legacy manual flow campaigns for Sales, App Promotion and Lead Generation, and TikTok advises migrating to the upgraded Smart+ APIs. Search campaigns are outside the cutoff.

Two practical readings:

  • If you build in the interface, the Ads Manager help center does not mention that date. But the direction is clear, and TikTok has a tool to duplicate existing campaigns into Smart+ campaigns, rolling out gradually.
  • If you use a tool that creates TikTok campaigns through the API, ask the vendor, in writing, how it will create lead, app and sales campaigns after January 1.

Automated or manual: the call by situation

There is no single answer. There is a right setup for each account:

  • New account, no conversion history. Automation has little signal to learn from. Start with manual targeting and automate creative.
  • Account with steady conversion volume. A good candidate for automatic campaign budget and creative combinations.
  • Local or regional business. Keep targeting and geography under control; automation may look for people outside your service area if the region is left open.
  • Lead gen where the sale happens off-platform. Be careful with automatic placements: leads from partner apps can differ in quality. Check the placement breakdown before you sign off.

The logic is close to Meta's: the platform optimizes for the event it receives, and checking whether that event turns into money is your job. The comparison is in Meta Ads automation vs an AI assistant.

What to test before January

A six-week plan to reach 2027 with data instead of a deadline scramble:

  1. Inventory. List the manual Sales, Lead Generation and App campaigns you still build the old way.
  2. Clean signal. Before automating anything, make sure the pixel and the Events API are sending the right event. Automation fed the wrong event optimizes the mistake. See TikTok pixel and the TikTok Events API.
  3. One module at a time. Duplicate your best campaign in the new flow, fully manual, and turn on creative combinations only. Same budget, same event.
  4. Two weeks, minimum. Less than that and you are measuring the learning phase, not the result.
  5. Then budget. If automated creative held cost per result, test the automatic campaign budget.
  6. Targeting and placements last. These are the modules that change most who sees your ad.

And the yardstick at each step:

  • Cost per result in Ads Manager, same period and objective
  • Placement breakdown, if automatic placements are on
  • Leads or sales from TikTok in your CRM
  • How often you rotate creative, because on TikTok videos wear out fast; see TikTok ads creatives

Signs automation is getting it wrong

Turning a module on is not a permanent decision. Switch it back to manual when you see one of these:

  • Stable cost per result while CRM revenue drops. The system found cheap leads that do not buy.
  • Spend stuck on one creative for days. The combinations stopped exploring; upload a fresh video before you blame automation.
  • A large share of spend off TikTok, on partner apps, with few sales.
  • Leads from outside your service area. Targeting or geography was left too open.

A single signal can be one week of noise. Two together, over two weeks of data, call for a change. And write down what you changed and when, so the next comparison is against a known baseline rather than memory. A shared note with the date, the module and the reason is enough.

Next step

Pick the manual campaign that sells the most and run your first duplicate in the new flow this week, with automated creative only. In two weeks you have your first answer, with time to spare before January. The questions to ask AI during the test are in optimize TikTok Ads with AI, and Vazante plans are on pricing.

Frequently asked questions

What is TikTok Smart+?

It is TikTok's campaign automation layer. In the upgraded experience, the manual and Smart+ flows are merged into one, and you choose full, partial or manual automation module by module: targeting, budget, placements, catalog and creative.

Is TikTok getting rid of manual campaigns?

TikTok's API documentation says that from January 1, 2027, API creation endpoints stop creating non-Search legacy manual flow campaigns for Sales, App Promotion and Lead Generation. The Ads Manager help center does not give that date for campaigns built in the interface.

Can I use Smart+ and keep manual targeting?

Yes. In the upgraded experience you can use custom targeting, ad group budgets and chosen placements, and automate only what you want, such as creative combinations.

How should I test Smart+ without losing my baseline?

Automate one module at a time, with the same budget and conversion event as your current campaign, for at least two weeks, and compare cost per result and CRM revenue, not just the Ads Manager number.
