The 24-hour coexistence sync: what actually happens in there
After connecting, WhatsApp spends a window building the initial state. What gets transferred, what does not, and why interrupting it is expensive.
Also available in: Português · Español
Between clicking connect and having coexistence working there is a period that surprises almost everyone: the platform spends time building the initial state from what is in the app.
That interval is not a formality. It is the moment the number starts existing on both sides, and interrupting it is the most common cause of a half-finished connection.
What happens during it
Three things, in parallel:
Recent history is transferred. Conversations from the recent past become visible to the platform, so the connected system does not start blind.
Contacts are recognized. Whoever already messaged the number stops being a stranger to the API.
State becomes shared. From then on, a message arriving in the app is also seen by the API, and the other way round.
That third part is what makes coexistence coexistence. Before it, you have two systems on one number. After it, you have one number in two places.
What does not come along
Worth setting expectations, because this is the most common disappointment:
| Comes | Does not |
|---|---|
| recent history | years of archive |
| app contacts | the phone's contact list |
| conversations and messages | labels and internal notes |
| current state | old media from every conversation |
If someone promised internally that "the whole history goes into the system", undo that before you start. It is a cheap conversation now and an expensive one later.
What not to do while it runs
The list is short and every item has broken somebody's connection:
Do not reinstall the app. It looks harmless and re-registers the device.
Do not switch phones. Same case, worse.
Do not disconnect and reconnect "to see if it helps". It is the instinctive reaction when the bar seems stuck, and it guarantees starting over.
Do not touch WhatsApp account settings. Number, business name, two-step verification — all frozen during the process.
Answering normally, yes. The team can and should keep replying. What they cannot do is touch configuration.
How to pick the moment
The connection itself takes minutes. The sync is what asks for patience, which is why timing matters.
Good moment: early in the week, in the morning, with whoever connected available for the next few hours and the team warned.
Bad moment: Friday end of day, the eve of a holiday, or a big campaign day. In all three, the odds of someone touching it unknowingly are high and nobody is around to fix it.
One sentence in the team chat covers it: "we are connecting the WhatsApp to a system today; keep answering normally, but nobody touches settings, reinstalls or switches devices until tomorrow."
How to know it finished
The useful signal is not a progress bar, it is behavior:
- Send a test message through the connected system, to a number you control.
- Reply from that number.
- Check the reply appears both in the app and in the system.
If all three work, coexistence is up. If the message goes out but the reply never shows in the system, shared state is not complete yet.
If it ended up incomplete
Do not panic and do not immediately repeat the process:
- Wait out the whole window before concluding it failed. Impatience causes half of all unnecessary reconnections.
- Check on the platform side whether the number shows as connected.
- Only redo it if it is still incomplete after the window.
- If you redo it, change nothing first. Same device, same account, same number — otherwise you trade one problem for another.
The piece on common coexistence mistakes has the diagnostic checklist for when you do not know where it stopped.
The summary
The sync is the part of the process where doing nothing is the correct action. Connecting takes minutes; letting it settle takes hours; and the difference between a connection that works and one that has to be redone is usually someone touching it mid-way believing they were helping.

Frequently asked questions
What gets synchronized during that period?
Recent conversation history and the app's contacts, so the platform has an initial state. It is not years of archive, and that needs to be clear before you start.
Can I use WhatsApp during the sync?
Answering normally, yes. What you must not do is touch the configuration, switch devices or reinstall the app while the process runs.
What if I interrupt it halfway?
The initial state ends up incomplete. Conversations are generally not lost, but the platform works from a partial view, and the fix is redoing the process.
Does it always take 24 hours?
It is a window, not a stopwatch. It can finish sooner depending on volume. What matters is not treating it as instant and not touching anything while it runs.
