Performance Max channel performance report: where the money went
Performance Max now shows spend and conversions by channel: Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover, Maps. Where to find it, how to read it, what to do next.
Also available in: Português · Español
The Performance Max channel performance report shows which channel your campaign spent on and converted in: Google Search, the Display Network, YouTube, Discover, Maps, Gmail and Search partners. You will find it under Campaigns, Insights and reports, Channel performance. It lists impressions, clicks, interactions, conversions, conversion value and cost per channel, with data from June 2025 onward. Since Google Ads API v23, released in January 2026, the same split is available through the API instead of the old blended value.
For years, Performance Max was one number. You got a CPA and no idea whether it came from branded search, YouTube views or banners on third-party sites. The channel report mostly fixes that. Not entirely, and it is worth knowing where it stops.
What the report shows
Per Google Ads Help, the page has four parts:
- Performance summary: campaign-level numbers, including actual CPA or ROAS and the average target.
- Channels-to-goals chart: pick a channel, a format (ads using product data, ads using video, or all ads) and a conversion type.
- Time series: each channel over the selected dates.
- Channel distribution table: the part that matters. It holds every metric, takes segments and can be downloaded.
Table segments include channel, ads using product data, ads using video, conversion category, conversion action and ad event type (engaged view, click, interaction, impression). A status column tells you whether a channel is eligible, eligible but limited, not eligible or missing required assets, and links to channel diagnostics.
Reading it without fooling yourself
| What you see | What it may mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube with lots of conversions and low CPA | Conversions credited to engaged views, not clicks | Segment by ad event type |
| Search carrying almost all results | PMax is picking up search demand, possibly branded | Search terms and your branded Search campaign |
| Display with high spend and few conversions | Cheap inventory that does not turn into sales | Conversion category and action on Display |
| A channel with no spend and no diagnostic issue | PMax is favoring higher-return channels | Nothing to fix unless you need presence there |
| A channel flagged for missing assets | No video, image or feed for that channel | Channel diagnostics |
The two classic mistakes: judging YouTube by conversions without splitting the event type, and celebrating Search CPA without noticing it is branded traffic you would have gotten anyway. And if the conversion you count is weak, every channel looks good. Get the goal right first, as covered in how to analyze a Google Ads campaign.
What to do when spend drifts to a weak channel
The Help Center page for this report says you cannot directly control budget by channel inside Performance Max. You influence it through assets, audience signals, conversion tracking, search themes, and content suitability settings and exclusions. In mid-October 2026, Google added one direct lever, still rolling out: channel prioritization. In PMax it lets you set Search partners and the Display Network to low priority with a percentage cap on daily budget. Google channels (Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover) stay grouped and cannot be split.
The order that tends to work:
- Confirm the channel is actually weak. Four weeks of data, primary conversions, event type split out. One bad week is not enough.
- Fix the conversion. If PMax optimizes for a weak action, it will chase whichever channel delivers that action cheapest. The same logic applies to target ROAS.
- Fix what feeds the channel. Weak Display with generic images needs better creative or content exclusions; weak YouTube with no video of your own needs a real video.
- Use channel prioritization once it reaches your account, for Display and Search partners: low priority, small cap, then measure.
- Split out search. If the problem is PMax eating branded queries, the fix is a Search campaign with exact match plus brand exclusions in PMax. See PMax vs Search.
Where the report stops
- Short history: only from June 2025.
- Store visits: offline conversions for individual stores are not split by channel; they are summed in the total column.
- Product video: video ads with products on YouTube and Discover, and Merchant Center formats on Gmail, are not yet in the ads using product data segment.
- Asset groups: channel data at the asset group level is API-only and does not appear in the UI.
- Third-party dashboards: since API v23, the API returns the specific channel instead of the blended value. A dashboard that filtered on that blended value may have lost Performance Max. If yours suddenly shows zero, start there.
The report tells you where the money went. It does not tell you whether Performance Max is right for the business. That is a separate call, and one that gets clearer once you can see the channel mix.
A monthly check that takes ten minutes
Once a month, per Performance Max campaign:
- Download the channel distribution table for the last four weeks and the four weeks before.
- Compare each channel's share of cost with its share of conversions. A channel taking 30% of spend and 5% of conversions is the one to look at.
- Split YouTube by ad event type before you judge it.
- Check the status column for any channel flagged as limited or missing assets.
- Write one line per campaign: what moved, and what, if anything, you will change.
That last line is what makes next month's read faster.
Your next step
Open the channel report on your biggest Performance Max campaign, use four weeks of data and segment by ad event type. Write down which channel carries the results and which one only spends. If the issue is branded search, fix it in Search; if it is Display, use channel prioritization when it arrives. To compare PMax and Search across several accounts in one conversation, see the plans: from US$ 31.20 a month on the annual plan, with the first 7 days for US$ 2.99.
