How to connect Google Ads to Looker Studio: steps, MCC and templates
Connect Google Ads to Looker Studio with the free native connector: the exact clicks, the 50-account MCC cap, Google's own templates and the fine print.
Also available in: Português · Español
To connect Google Ads to Looker Studio you do not need a paid tool: the connector is native and built by Google. In Looker Studio, click Create → Data source, pick Google Ads, authorize access, choose the account (or a manager account with up to 50 sub-accounts), click CONNECT, then CREATE REPORT. It takes about five minutes. The work starts afterwards: the data refreshes every 12 hours, Google has retired some fields, and currencies get converted when you mix accounts. Below are the exact steps, the official templates worth using, and the limits I see trip people up.
One naming note first. In April 2026 Google announced that Looker Studio is going back to its old name, Data Studio, and the old address now redirects to datastudio.google.com. Existing reports, data sources and share links carried over with no action needed. I say "Looker Studio" here because that is still what most people type into Google.
Why Google Ads is the easy case
The connector gallery lists 21 connectors built by Google itself: Google Ads, Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube Analytics and a handful of databases. Meta, TikTok and X are not on that list. For those you need a partner connector, a spreadsheet, or an API project; I walk through the TikTok and X versions in connect TikTok Ads to Looker Studio and connect X Ads to Looker Studio.
So if your report is Google Ads only, Looker Studio is genuinely the zero-connector-cost option. It is the scenario where I recommend it without hesitation.
Step by step: connect Google Ads to Looker Studio
Labels below follow Google's own help page.
- Sign in to Looker Studio (datastudio.google.com) with the Google account that has access to Google Ads.
- Top left, click Create, then Data source.
- Select Google Ads, the one marked "By Google". The gallery also has partner connectors with the same name.
- On first use, authorize Looker Studio to access your account. You can revoke it later from your Google account permissions.
- In the Accounts panel, click ALL ACCOUNTS and search by account ID or name.
- Select Overall Account Fields. It merges every Google Ads field into one list, so you can mix dimensions and metrics that live in different Google Ads reports.
- Click CONNECT. The fields panel opens.
- Rename fields, add calculated fields (CPA, conversion rate, ROAS) and check the aggregation on each metric.
- Click CREATE REPORT, then ADD TO REPORT, and start adding charts and controls.
One habit that saves rework: build calculated fields in the data source, not inside a chart. Every report that uses the source inherits the same formula, and you fix it once.
Using a manager (MCC) account
In the Accounts panel choose MANAGER ACCOUNTS, select the MCC and tick the sub-accounts. Google's help spells out three rules that matter for agencies:
- 50 sub-accounts per data source. An agency with 70 clients needs at least two sources.
- Currency conversion. If you pick "All currencies" and mix, say, US dollar and Canadian dollar accounts, revenue-related fields are converted to the currency of the top-level MCC. Handy for totals; confusing for a Canadian client who expects to see CAD.
- Viewer access. The help page says report viewers must also have access to the manager account and every selected sub-account, and that sub-account access alone is not enough. If a client opens the link and sees an error, check this and the data source credentials first.
Credentials: who sees what
| Data source credential | Who can see the data | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Owner's credentials | Anyone with access to the report, without their own Google Ads access | Client-facing reports |
| Viewer's credentials | Only people with their own access to the account | Internal reports where each person should see only what they already see |
| Service account | A non-human Google account you authorize | Teams with stricter data governance |
Owner's credentials are the agency default. The risk: when the person who owns the source leaves and loses access, every report built on it goes blank at once. Own your sources with an account that will outlive any single employee.
Google Ads templates for Looker Studio
Before building from scratch, open the template gallery and filter by marketing. The Data Studio team publishes, among others: Campaign Performance, Day-wise Performance, Keyword Performance, Search Query Performance, Device Performance, Geographic Performance, Account CPA / ROAS Tool and Daily Budget Depletion Insights.
To use one:
- Open the template and click Use my own data.
- Click Replace data and pick your Google Ads account. If the template has several sources, repeat for each.
- Check the dots next to the source: orange means you only have view access to the sample source, green means full access. Google itself warns that copying a template while it still points at the sample source leaves you with errors.
My order for a first report: Day-wise Performance (spend and conversions per day, the chart you will look at most), Campaign Performance (the table for the client call) and Search Query Performance (search terms, where wasted Search spend hides). Account CPA / ROAS Tool earns its place on ecommerce accounts with conversion values set up.
The ones I would skip: the Auction Insights templates. Google removed Auction Insights fields from Looker Studio connectors in 2024 (new sources lost them in August, existing ones in September, no exceptions), so expect empty charts or errors.
The limits nobody mentions up front
| Limit | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 12-hour refresh | Looker can be half a day behind the Google Ads UI | Editors use Refresh data; one-minute cooldown between manual refreshes |
| Zero-impression entities | Campaigns or ad groups with no impressions do not appear | Do not count campaigns in Looker; count them in Google Ads |
| Auction Insights | Fields removed from all connectors since 2024 | Drop them; check auction data in Google Ads itself |
| Location extensions | Store and affiliate location fields stopped returning data on May 4, 2026 | Switch to the matching "Asset location" fields |
| Creative assets | Clicks and impressions by asset can be wrong | Add "Ad Type" and "Asset ID" to the chart, as Google's help asks |
The first one causes the most client emails. They open the report at 3 p.m., open Google Ads at 3:05, and the numbers differ. Nobody made a mistake; it is the fixed 12-hour refresh for Google's ad products. Put "data refreshed twice a day" in the report footer and the email never gets written.
What Looker Studio will not do for you
Looker Studio shows. It does not answer "why did CPA jump since Thursday?" and it does not pause the campaign burning budget. That is fine for a monthly client report. For daily operations, a 12-hour lag and a chart you have to interpret alone are not enough.
So I split the jobs. Looker Studio holds the client report, laid out the way the agency wants. Day-to-day work happens somewhere the data is live and a question gets an answer. If the report also needs Meta Ads, do not add conversions from both platforms in one number; Meta and Google Ads in one dashboard explains why. And if you are still deciding whether Looker is the right home at all, spreadsheet, dashboard or BI gives you the criterion.
Checklist before you send the link
- Data source on owner's credentials, owned by an account that will not disappear
- CPA, conversion rate and ROAS built as calculated fields from sums, not averages
- Date control with comparison to the previous period
- No Auction Insights or old location extension fields anywhere
- Footer stating the 12-hour refresh and the currency
- For MCC sources: confirmed the viewer has the access Google's help requires
- Opened in an incognito window, signed in as the client, before sending
Where to go from here
If your report is Google Ads only, use the native connector, start from the Day-wise Performance template and run the checklist. Thirty minutes gets you something presentable. If the plan is Meta, Google and TikTok on one screen, Looker stops being free in practice, because the other two need partner connectors. And if what you actually want is to ask questions and act on the answer rather than draw charts, see how Google Ads works in the Claude connector, or the step-by-step in connect Google Ads to Claude.
